Aaron Shneyer

Aaron Shneyer, 26, was born and raised in Washington, D.C., and has been living in Jerusalem since 2006. He directs HEARTBEAT: The Israeli - Palestinian Youth Music Project, which he founded in 2007 under a Fulbright-MTVu grant to study the power of music to build understanding and amplify youth voices for change. Aaron performs with numerous ensembles throughout the United States, Israel, and Palestine. An album of his original music, "Have You Heard," was released in 2005 by TwoLight Records. He sings and plays anything with strings.

Abraham Awolich

Abraham Awolich has a Masters degree in Public Administration from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University. He specialized in international development management and administration, public organizational management, human resource management, and public finance in developing countries. Abraham was a winner of the World Bank Development Marketplace grant competition for $200,000 in 2007 to build a high school in Southern Sudan. He was also awarded the Samuel Huntington Public Service Award by the National Grid after his graduation in 2006.

Adrián Jiménez

Adrián Jiménez is the founding Editor-in-Chief of 12th Street, a literary journal published by the Riggio Honors Program at The New School. His novel, The Cheese Smuggler, is represented by Deborah Carter at Muse Literary Management. He has published in the Brooklyn Rail, Chelsea Now, The Villager, and Downtown Express. He lives in South Beach, Miami with his wife who is a physician.

Adriana Valdez Young

Adriana is a community cartographer, under-utilized space modifier, and urban lifestyle researcher. She teaches a course about the suburbanization of NYC at the Parsons School of Design and is the Research Director for CAPITAL B. Her projects explore extreme modes of domesticity and the relationship between shopping, the war on terror and freedom. Currently, she is investigating new shopping mall construction in Baghdad and exploring guerilla gardening projects for fenced-off grassy areas around public housing towers in NYC. She holds a B.A.

Ahmet Sibdial Sau

A New Jersey native, Ahmet Sibdial Sau is an accomplished Media specialist, photographer, director of photography and photo editor. He has worked for Time Magazine, Black Book Magazine, Food Arts, New York Magazine, Food & Wine, City Magazine, Art Flash International, Essence Magazine, American Express and New York Times as well as numerous leading Non government organizations (NGO) and book publishers.

Alison Desir

Alison Mariella Desir is currently pursuing her Masters in International Affairs, with a concentration in conflict and security, at The New School in New York City. As an undergraduate student at Columbia University, Alison majored in History and Latino Studies. She hopes to one day work abroad in Haiti, within the realm of sustainable development. She has traveled widely in recent years, Korea, Guatemala, Greece, Colombia, Haiti, and Ghana, to name a few countries she has visited. When Alison is not traveling, she enjoys singing and writing.

Amrut Abhyankar

Amrut Abhyankar is an intern at an architectural firm in NaviMumbai, India. Previously he worked with IDC (International Design Clinic), and PUKAR Parson, The New School of Design, on a project trying to understand the effects of the ubiquitous nature of space.   Amrut recently participated in the Shinkenchiku Residential Design Competion and attended a photography workshop led by David D`Souza (in coordination with PUKAR). Amrut is keen on understanding theoretical, critical approaches in design. He is also interested in documentary film and loves hiking nature trails.

Anam Khan

Anam graduated in 2010 from Smith College with a B.A in English language and literature and a minor in international relations. She is currently an intern at a management consulting firm that provides professional services to the non-profit community. Anam was also a 2009 summer intern for Senator Kirsten Gillibrand of New York and also served as a development intern for the World Policy Institute in New York. During the summer of 2008, Anam was an editorial intern for publisher W.W Norton & Co.

Andres Zea

Andres was born in Medellin, Colombia and moved to the United States with his family at the age of seven. He holds a B.A. in International Affairs from the University of Georgia and an M.A. from The New School.  Andres loves studying languages and speaks English, Spanish, French, and Portuguese to varying degrees and is currently learning Mandarin Chinese. He has done extensive volunteer work, and he has participated in international internships in Porto, Portugal and Buenos Aires, Argentina. Andres currently resides in Atlanta, GA with his fiancé and newborn baby boy.

Andy Thornton

After working for around eight years as a computer programmer in investment banking I returned to university to study on the New School's Graduate Program in International Affairs (GPIA). I graduated in May 2008 and am now working in the Human Development Report Office at UNDP. I participated in the China (Kunming) IFP in Summer 2007. I wrote my thesis on microcredit. Whilst on the program I helped out a little with GPIA Student Government, I was also pleased to be able to organize a series of events about the Congo.

Anthony P. Johnson

Anthony P. (Tony) Johnson is a preacher, activist, organizer, and writer. As a minister and consultant, he works with congregations, community organizations, and multifaith alliances on issues of racial and economic justice. Based at the Community Church of New York Unitarian Universalist, he also works with congregations in Meriden, Connecticut and Englewood, New Jersey. His intellectual work is at the intersection of theology, sociology, poetry, and the street.

Antony Adolf

Antony Adolf is the author of Peace: A World History (Polity Press), and a teacher, public speaker, and independent scholar. He is the publisher of One World, Many Peaces: Current Events Creating the Future. He has appeared on national television and regularly speaks at popular and academic events related to peace studies, peace history, and peace activism around the U.S. and globally.

Arie Amaya-Akkermans

Arie Amaya-Akkermans is a freelance writer, occasional journalist, & curious traveler of lesser known corners of modern European thought. An aficionado for global cinemas, minor literatures of Europe, and Mexican food, he writes a column for BikyaMasr (Egypt) on Arab cinema with bits of politics.

Ather Zia

Ather Zia is from Kashmir. She has published her first collection of poems, "The Frame," and her work has appeared in a variety of magazines, including Convergence Journal, Blazevox, and others. Her work of creative fiction is forthcoming. When not writing she is a graduate candidate in anthropology at UC Irvine. Caty Gordon

Caty Gordon received her BA from Virginia Tech in English, and will receive her MFA in Creative Writing from Columbia University in 2013. She advocates for social justice, the empowerment of women, and “sticking it to the man.”

Chris Eberhardt (汪哲伟)

chris eberhardt, originally from Tacoma, Washington, is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Sociology from The New School for Social Research. He holds an M.A. and B.A. in Sociology. He was a 2008 India China Institute Student Fellow. chris also helped found the organization imagining global asia in 2006, and has since played an integral role in developing public events and contributing bi-lingual blogs.

Chris Haddix

Chris Haddix studied philosophy at the New School for Social Research, where he focused on phenomenlogy, political theory, and Enlightenment eroticism. He lives in Bushwick, Brooklyn,  and can usually be found on the streets, documenting the local art scene or hard at work indulging his passion for tacos.

Colin Geraghty

Colin Geraghty, born in Boston (USA), lives in France, and follows international security issues, especially South Asian affairs. He received a Masters in International Relations from the Institute of International and Strategic Relations in Paris (IRIS, Institut de Relations Internationales et Stratégiques, www.iris-france.org), holds dual US-French citizenship, and brings a combination of European and American perspectives to the table.

Corinne Goldenberg

Corinne Goldenberg has a B.A. in Women and Gender Studies with a concentration in Cultural and Ethnic Studies from Smith College and a M.A. in International Affairs from the New School, where she dually concentrated in Media and Cultural Studies and International Development. She has had the privilege of living and studying in some of the best film cities in the world—Paris, Bombay, New York. She explores the ways through which political forces interact with art and culture, particularly focusing on modes of intercultural communication, for better or for worse.

Corrie Hulse

Corrie Hulse is a graduate of the University of Washington with her Master's in Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences. While at the UW Graduate School, Corrie focused her studies on international affairs and political theory. She has recently completed her thesis entitled, "Shared Humanity: Protection and its Problems," exploring the Responsibility to Protect and the complicated intersection of human rights and international politics. During her time as a graduate student, Corrie worked as an intern with the United Nations Association, Greater Seattle Chapter.

Cæmeron Crain

Cæmeron Crain is pursuing his PhD in Philosophy at the New School for Social Research, and teaches as an adjunct lecturer in New York City. He earned his M.A. in Philosophy, as well as a B.A. in Communications, from Kent State University in Kent, Ohio.

Dan May is an avid reader, writer and homebrewer in Portland, Oregon. He writes weekly at A Pint for Dionysus (http://apintfordionysus.wordpress.com/) on the beer he makes and drinks, as well as the places he visits.

Danny Schechter

Danny Schechter became the “News Dissector” as a newscaster on WBCN in Boston. The nickname stuck as his nom de media guerre. He’s still doing it as a blogger, author, filmmaker, and troublemaker. Daryn Cambridge

Daryn Cambridge is an experiential education and training consultant, an advisor for educational initiatives at the International Center on Nonviolent Conflict, and an adjunct professor at American University where he teaches Education for Peace and Conflict Resolution and Education for International Development.

Ed Hancox

When not writing about international affairs, Ed Hancox works in nonprofit development. He holds a M.A. degree in International Affairs from The New School where he worked as a research associate on a project examining Russia's transition from Communism. Before earning his Masters, Ed worked as a journalist, a disc jockey and as a technical writer with a multi-national electronics firm. His writings on global affairs can also be found at A World View.

El Hadji Beye

Born in Senegal, El Hadji came to United States in 1996 with a degree in civil engineering. After a twelve year career in the construction industry as an estimator, El Hadji started a social business focused on African development. He speaks English, French, Wolof (Senegal), and Bambara (Mali), and enjoys playing basketball, good food, and his family.  

Emily Cody

Emily studied political science and philosophy at Fordham University in New York, and completed field research in Cyprus, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Turkey, and Greece. She has a graduate certificate from the International Institute of Genocide and Human Rights Studies at the University of Toronto and this year she will begin her pursuit of an MSc at the School of Oriental and African Studies in Violence, Conflict, and Development in London. Currently Emily is a Programme Assistant with a Sudanese human rights organisation and living in Kampala, Uganda.

Emmanuel Iduma

Emmanuel Iduma was born in Akure, Nigeria. He obtained a degree in Law from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. His interests range widely, including web technology, digital art, visual art, and creative writing. Emmanuel works mainly as a writer of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry, and has won awards and received recognition in each genre.

Eric Anthamatten

Eric Anthamatten is currently a Ph.D. candidate at the New School for Social Research in New York City. His work focuses on philosophy, education, and social justice, more specifically on issues surrounding education in marginal, non-traditional, and non-academic settings: the prison, adult education, the homeless. Eric received an M.A. in Philosophy from Texas A&M University as well as a Bachelor of Science in Political Science and a minor in electronic music.

Erik Sanner

Erik Sanner is a visual artist living and working in New York City. Sanner’s work has recently been shown at The Danforth Museum (Massachusetts), the Brooklyn Arts Council Gallery (New York), and the Charles Thomas Contemporary (Los Angeles). Sanner was awarded Manhattan Community Arts Fund grants in 2007 and 2009. Upcoming exhibits include projects at LICHT FELD 11 (Basel, 9/11), the Courtauld Institute of Art (London, 1/12), and the Glyndor Gallery at Wave Hill (NY, 4/12). In Basel he is represented by LICHT FELD.

Erika Klein

Erika Klein is an author and freelance writer who spent many years serving the community through volunteer work, board of directorships and performing media work and public education. Self-taught and a survivor of Canada's child welfare system, she spends most of her time championing and furthering the human rights for those who are vulnerable and at risk. She's also the proud mother of a lovely daughter.

Evan Lewis

Evan Lewis is currently the Research Associate at WorldPublicOpinion.org, where he participates in the creation and analysis of international polls on issues, such as Human Rights, democracy, Climate Change, international institutions, diplomacy, and terrorism.  At the same time Evan has worked with the Program on International Policy Attitudes, which studies American attitudes on domestic and international issues, such as US involvement in Iraq, Trade, Non-proliferation, America’s role in the world, and Healthcare Policy.

Garic K. Lawrence

Garic K. Lawrence is the Executive Director of Mattoon (IL) Area P.A.D.S. Homeless Shelter. He has a Master's Degree in Political Science with a concentration in International Relations and Comparative Politics.

Gay Uganda

I am a Ugandan. Born in Uganda. Grew up in Uganda. Studied in Uganda. An African. I also happen to be gay, and that small fact has come to change my life, and rule my destiny. From the time that I found that I was different, to the time I embraced and then wore with pride my difference. I started to write of my life to vent, something that I could not do in my country. Gibson Bateman

Gibson Bateman is an international consultant based in New York City. He is a graduate of Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA). A former Peace Corps volunteer, Bateman has worked for leading NGOs in Latin America, Africa, and South Asia. Most of Gibson's work has focused on infrastructure development, grassroots politics, and human rights.

Grace Kim

Grace Kim immigrated to South Africa with her family at the age of two, and is currently studying at Universiteit Stellenbosch for her MA in English with a focus on marginalized South African narratives. She loves bubbles, likes strawberries, dislikes cigarette smoke, and hates the feeling of nausea. When she’s not going through existential crises about her writing, her drug of choice is poetry and has had some of her work published by local journals and publications. Writing reviews is a new adventure for her. 

Jake Perry

Jake Perry is a media-everyman with experience in evaluating, directing, and assessing multiple media campaigns across varied mediums. Also a seasoned researcher and writer specializing in digital media, Jake graduated from The New School University with an MA in International Affairs in January 2010. Currently, Jake spends his time watching social media's steady march while writing and working from his home in upstate New York.

Jeremy Worthington is a graduate of the Elliott School of International Affairs at The George Washington University. Joe Bigley

Joe Bigley is a multi-media visual artist who has shown work in the U.S., Europe, and China. He received his M.F.A. in sculpture from Alfred University in 2008 and is currently an adjunct faculty member at Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C.  

John Schellhase

John Schellhase is a returned Peace Corps volunteer who served in the Philippines. During his twenty-seven month assignment, John taught English and education courses at the University of Antique, led HIV/AIDS prevention seminars, and conducted professional development trainings for Filipino teachers. He received a B.A. with a double-major in English and Classical Studies from the University of Arkansas in 2006. In the fall of 2011, he will begin an M.S. in Global Affairs at New York University.

Jonas Claes

Jonas Claes is senior program specialist at the U.S. Institute of Peace's Center for Conflict Management, focusing on conflict prevention and the prevention of mass atrocities.

Jonathan Amid

Jonathan David Amid was born in Israel and moved to South Africa at the age of four. He is currently pursuing a Masters in English Literature at Stellenbosch University.

 

 

Josh Linden

Josh is a graduate of James Madison University where he earned a degree in International Affairs and Middle Eastern Communities. After spending his junior year studying at Ben-Gurion University in Israel, Josh moved to Tel Aviv to serve as a volunteer coordinator for Amnesty International’s Israel Section, working to promote awareness of Israel’s less-talked about humanitarian crisis: the influx of African refugees.

Karl Fotovat

Karl Fotovat studies and teaches philosophy and psychoanalysis in New York. He represses literary aspirations, runs a nonprofit prevarication organization for the wealthy, helps young ladies cross the street, and wavers between sardonicism and misanthropy.

Katherine Chen

Katherine J. Chen is a sophomore at Princeton University majoring in English with certificates in Creative Writing and East Asian Studies. She is involved with publications on campus and currently works as a writer and intern for several professional websites and online magazines.

 

Kavitha Rajagopalan

Kavitha Rajagopalan is a writer and policy analyst. As a senior fellow at the World Policy Institute, she has written and lectured widely on global migration, and taught courses at NYU's Center for Global Affairs. She has worked as a consultant for financial services and social justice organizations, and as a journalist in the U.S., Germany and India.

Larisa Bomlitz

Larisa Bomlitz holds an M.P.H. and an M.A. in International Affairs and currently lives and works in New York city, NY. 

Laura Rodríguez Arias

Laura Rodríguez Arias is journalist, focusing on culture, politics and society for numerous online publications. Previously she worked for several print publications in Spain, and brought to fruition a cultural television program. Laura now lives in Uruguay where she is earning her Master’s in Latin American studies.

Laura Thies

A native of Germany, Laura has earned her BFA in Musical Theater, a Certificate in Screen Writing, a Certificate in 16mm Film Production, an MA in Media Studies, and an MA in International Affairs. She lives in New York City.

Lauren Young

Lauren Young is currently a research assistant looking at governance and private sector investment in Africa at the Center for Global Development. Lauren joins CGD from Monrovia where she worked for the past year in Liberia facilitating projects related to returnee reintegration as a Grants Manager for the American Refugee Committee. She graduated from Stanford University with a BA in International Relations and honors in International Security Studies.

Leigh Held

Leigh Held is a graduate of the Boston University College of Communication. During her time in Boston she worked as a nighthawk on the Boston Globe’s sports desk and for CFO magazine. Lisa Allen

Lisa M. Allen holds a B.A. in History from the University of Texas at Austin and an MSc in the History of International Relations from the London School of Economics and Political Science.  She is currently enrolled in the Terrorism Studies Certificate Program through the University of St. Andrews, and is a Terrorism Blogger for the Foreign Policy Association. She currently lives and works in Washington, D.C.

Lisa Guáqueta

Lisa Guáqueta studied economics at Universidad Externado de Colombia and holds a master's degree in international affairs from The New School. Her interests include the urban dynamics of Latin America, especially the role of cities and local governments in international issues. She is both fascinated by and fearful of boarded up windows and doors, and, for some strange reason, takes many photos of abandonded industrial structures.

M. Junaid Levesque-Alam

M. Junaid Levesque-Alam, a Foreign Policy In Focus contributor, lives in New York. He has been published in several outlets, including Altmuslim.com, Antiwar.com, and The Nation's website. He writes about America and Islam on his website, Crossing the Crescent.

Malalai Joya

Malalai Joya is one of Afghanistan’s leading democracy activists. In 2005, she became the youngest person ever elected to the Afghan parliament. She was suspended in 2007 for her denunciation of warlords and their cronies in government. She has just written her memoir, A Woman Among Warlords: The Extraordinary Story of an Afghan Woman Who Dared to Speak Out (Scribner, 2009). Visit her personal website here.

Marianna Gurtovnik

Marianna Gurtovnik's interests lie in foreign policy, international security, and energy security. She has written on these topics for World Politics Review, Transitions Online, and the Congressionally-funded Project on National Security Reform (PNSR). For PNSR, she completed research studies on the strengths and weaknesses of the U.S. Government's response to the Iran-Iraq War (1980-88) and the Suez Canal Crisis (1956). She holds a Master's Degree in Public Administration from American University in Washington, DC.
