The Tie

Thursday, October 29, 2009

The film that I am posting this week was my first 16mm film that I wrote and produced. Entitled “The Tie,” it carries a lot of meaning and different messages addressing the subject of teenage bullying.

The Oxford English Dictionary states:

 <bully, v.1
[f. BULLY n.1

1. trans. To act the bully towards; to treat in an overbearing manner; to intimidate, overawe.
    b. To overweigh, overbalance.
2. To drive or force by bullying; to frighten into a certain course; with away, into, out of, to.
3. intr. and absol. To bluster, use violent threats; to swagger.

The action of the verb to BULLY: overbearing insolence; personal intimidation; petty tyranny. Often used with reference to schoolboy life. Also attrib.>

Why did I choose bullying as the subject?

Well, who hasn’t been bullied? ...anybody? Please raise your voice or type away if you haven’t …Anybody? ...Nobody?

Well then: who hasn’t ever bullied? ...anybody?

Exactly.

Everybody has been bullied at some point in their lives; sometimes more, sometimes less. And I bet that if you are honest with yourself you have also bullied somebody else, even if it was just making fun about somebody’s hair on that one particular day.

Therefore my target audience is… the world. Perfect!

But seriously now! Imagine what you would be like today if you hadn’t been bullied about that one pair of colorful pants that you loved so much when you were 14. They made you feel so good, so happy. They were just made for you, but one of your classmates made fun of them and you felt uncomfortable for the rest of that day. Would you have worn them more often, not just on the weekends when you stayed at home? Would you have bought that really crazy dress a year later that made you feel just as happy when you tried it on? Would you care today about what others think about your looks? Would you show your real self more often? Would you feel more free? Free…? free… free!

Just being bullied once, changes most of us at least a little. Kids that are constant targets are being changed for life. And not just them! Even as adults we still care too much about what others think about us and we still take it to heart!

Pressure from society seems to be so heavy, so real, so… important! Why? For what?

How much lighter life would be! How much happier we would be if the word “bullying” didn’t have to be written down in the Oxford English Dictionary!

This was a very good film. I really liked how it touches upon the various aspects of bullying. And how everything comes full circle for the major character.
